PUBLISHING HISTORY EXPLAINED
1999-2003: I created the characters, started drawing the first stories about them. During this time I was writing and drawing the first two story arcs. “WE HAVE NO HOME”, and “BIZARRE EXPERIMENTS”.
2004-2005: Chanting Monks Press publishes the first batch of Wulf and Batsy material in the following comics:
CHANTING MONKS PRESS releases:
–WULF & BATSY. 64-page one-shot comic (2005). With a guest-cover illustration by Joe Chiodo. Includes (for the first time in print) the complete, 2-part story: “WE HAVE NO HOME”.
– ZACHERLEY’S MIDNITE TERRORS (anthology comic), Issue 1 (2004). Includes the Wulf and Batsy short story (for the first time in print): “IF YOU KNEW”.
– ZACHERLEY’S MIDNITE TERRORS (anthology comic), Issue 2 (2005). Includes the Wulf and Batsy short story (for the first time in print): “THEM’S MONSTERS!”.
2005-2006: Chanting Monks Press had financial problems and went out of business.
2007-2008: Viper Comics picked up Wulf and Batsy. With the intention of publishing all my material from the beginning.
VIPER COMICS releases:
–WULF & BATSY issue 1 (2007). With a guest cover by Josh Howard. Reprints “WE HAVE NO HOME” Part 1.
–WULF & BATSY issue 2 (2007). With a guest cover by Josh Howard. Reprints “WE HAVE NO HOME” Part 2.
–WULF & BATSY issue 3 (2007-2008). With a guest cover by Josh Howard. Publishes (for the first time in print) “BIZARRE EXPERIMENTS” Part 1.
2008: Viper Comics had financial problems and went out of business.
I kept getting e-mails from readers asking when the next issue was coming out. Which made me decide, maybe I better start self-publishing Wulf and Batsy myself. So I started my own little publishing label called “Crypt Logic Comics” (named after a series of Horror art and comics I made in High School).
CRYPT LOGIC COMICS releases:
–WULF & BATSY issue 4 (2008). With a guest cover by Josh Howard. Publishes (for the first time in print) “BIZARRE EXPERIMENTS” Part 2.
My first experiment with self-publishing was unsatisfying. In 2008, the cost of printing, vs a reasonable cover price, just didn’t add up for a 24 page, single issue comic. However, the math worked out better with trade paperbacks. So I abandoned the single-issue self-publishing route and switched to self-publishing Wulf and Batsy in trade paperback format. This proved much more successful, and gave me freedom to do longer stories.
–WULF and BATSY VOLUME 1 (approx. 240-page Trade Paperback). 2008. Includes the complete “WE HAVE NO HOME” story arc and the complete “BIZARRE EXPERIMENTS” story arc. Plus a 40-page Supplemental section at the end.
Because all of the story content in Vol.1 had been completed years earlier, I started writing and drawing a new, 6-chapter Wulf and Batsy story called “Lustmord Nightmares” in the background at the same time I was getting all the self-publishing work done on Volume 1.
–WULF and BATSY VOLUME 2: LUSTMORD NIGHTMARES (approx. 278-page Trade Paperback). 2009. Includes the complete “LUSTMORD NIGHTMARES” story arc (first time in print). Plus a Supplemental section at the end.
In 2010 I started writing and drawing “Magnum Orgus” which I intended to be “my epic” Wulf and Batsy story, with a huge cast of characters, and multiple interweaving plot threads. Because I was doing this project on the side of my day job, this story took seven years to complete. It ended up being 500 pages and was too big for the publisher to print in one book, so I ended up breaking it in half and publishing it in the next two trade paperbacks.
–WULF and BATSY VOLUME 3: MAGNUM ORGUS (approx. 250-page Trade Paperback). 2017. Includes chapters 1-4 of the “MAGNUM ORGUS” story arc (first time in print).
–WULF and BATSY VOLUME 4: MAGNUM ORGUS II (approx. 250-page Trade Paperback). 2017. Includes chapters 5-8 of the “MAGNUM ORGUS” story arc (for the first time in print). Plus a Supplemental section at the end.
After this, my wife and I had a baby. As a first-time parent, I had no idea how this would change my life. I wasn’t sure if I would ever have time to do any more comics, ever again. After all comics was not my day job, it was a hobby on the side of my day job. But I felt okay about it because I thought Magnum Orgus was a good one to go out on.
NOTE: ALL 4 of these Trade Paperbacks are still available for order at IndyPlanet website.
–WULF and BATSY in: SCARIFYING TALES A one-shot anthology comic I self-published in 2013, as a “convention exclusive” for an appearance at the 2013 “Son of Monsterpalooza” horror convention in Burbank,CA. Reprints the early Wulf and Batsy short stories: “THEM’S MONSTERS” (2004) and “IF YOU KNEW” (2004), plus includes “THE LEFT STOCKING” (2005), a previously unreleased short story, first time in print.
4 years later…
2021 (January) – I was contacted by Peter Simeti of Alterna Comics, asking if I’d like to publish my stuff with his company. We agreed to publish Wulf and Batsy as an ongoing comic book series, reprinting the entire series from the beginning, with the intention that under Alterna every Wulf and Batsy story would be released, in order, for a new audience that had never heard of the series before.
By this point in time, the early Wulf and Batsy story arcs “WE HAVE NO HOME” and “BIZARRE EXPERIMENTS” were 20 years old. The artwork looked embarrassingly out-dated to me. I didn’t want to completely re-draw it, but I decided to make several revisions to the worst “sore spots” in the old artwork, to make it more presentable for this new, ongoing comic book series edition, to be released in the 2020s. Alterna’s page count limits also became a factor, requiring the chapter lengths of my multi-part story arcs to be broken up a little differently in the ongoing comic series, than they were originally presented in the original, self-published trade paperback versions. This made the creation of new pages necessary for the beginnings and endings of certain chapters in the story arcs. If you watch my “Issue Commentary” videos on YouTube, I point out where the major revisions and differences occur.
Simply put, the current, 2021-present Wulf and Batsy ongoing comic book series does reprint previous material but is a revised/ updated/ new and improved version.
It should also be noted, part of the agreement with Alterna, was that I would create some new Wulf and Batsy stories to publish, in-between reprinting the old story arcs.
